Depending on a client’s concerns, I use a range of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) tools which can include relaxation and mindfulness techniques, thought diaries and a range behavioural tasks which are tailored to my client’s needs.

My name is Lisa Attwood. I am an experienced counsellor and registered member of the BACP. I am truly passionate about my work and adhere to professional and ethical standards. I offer a warm, non-judgmental space for clients to explore their situations and present their issues.

The counselling approach I use integrates client-centred counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques which are tailored to work together with each client and their individual needs. I offer brief solution-focused therapy and longer-term counselling. I am able to let go of my theoretical assumptions to be able to just sit with the client in a supportive and reflective space which sometimes is all that is needed for some client issues. Counselling can help with most life issues and concerns.

When managing our busy lives stress can affect our mind, body and the way we behave in different ways and everyone can experience stress differently. The more common signs of stress can include sleeping problems, sweating, loss of appetite and difficulties in concentrating.

I aim to create a safe and calm space, where we will work together to explore a client’s thoughts, emotions and behaviours, helping a client to be mindful of their individual triggers and reactions to stress. Being aware of theses triggers and managing our reactions to stress can counteract any un-helpful coping mechanisms that you may have adopted, therefore reducing the symptoms of stress. This can help to lead a calmer and more balanced life.

Anxiety & Panic

Anxiety is something that we all experience. Short term anxiety can be useful, for example, as being nervous before a job interview can increase our alertness and increase our performance. Short term fear can be healthy to help us survive and recognise dangerous situations.

If anxiety becomes really severe, this fear can lead to a panic attack, where you may feel powerless and out of control or feel that you are going to die or may feel that you are going mad. You may experience physical symptoms such as a pounding heartbeat, feeling faint, sweating, nausea, chest pains, breathing discomfort, feelings of losing control, shaky limbs and legs turning to jelly.

My aim is to create a shared and supportive space for clients to explore the underlying causes of their worries and fears. To help clients learn how to relax and look at situations in new, less fearful ways and develop better coping and problem-solving skills to be able to manage their anxieties.

There are times in our lives that we all feel sad and low, but this feeling usually shifts after a few days. Depression is when the low mood is persistent, lasting weeks or months and can make a person feel intense emotions of anxiety, hopelessness, negativity and helplessness. Depression is usually triggered by life events such as relationship or work problems, bereavement, illness or financial problems etc. The severity of depression depends on how many symptoms you experience, which can include disturbed sleep patterns, agitation, change of appetite, tiredness, poor concentration and reccuring thoughts of death.

I work with clients in a supportive and reflective space to explore the meanings that they have assigned to life events. These meanings can influence a negative cycle of thought patterns. By acknowledging and challenging these meanings and negative thought patterns, it helps us to be mindful that this then influences how we feel and how we behave.

Low Self-esteem

You may feel that ‘you are always to blame’ and ‘nothing goes right for me’

Self esteem is the beliefs that you hold about yourself. A healthy self esteem will mostly hold positive views about your own abilities, but you can deal with difficult times without it having too much of an impact on you.

If you have low self esteem, the beliefs that you have about yourself and your abilities will mostly be negative. There are tendencies to focus on your weaknesses rather than your strengths; or struggle to find any positive parts to your personality.

I help clients to improve their self-esteem by exploring the relationship of their thoughts, feelings and behaviour in relation to how they view themselves and what keeps the low self-esteem going. My aim is to help you to rebuild a more accurate and balanced view of yourself to be able to manage your life in a more resilient way.

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anybody and anybody can be an abuser.

It does not just happen to women; men can be victims too, whether their partner is a man or a woman. They could be or have been an intimate partner, family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. Domestic violence and abuse is any incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening behaviour, violence or abuse. The abuse may involve but may not be limited to psychological, physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse. The consequences of domestic violence and abuse can include depression, low self-esteem and a sense of hopelessness.

I create a safe and supportive space where clients can process the difficult thoughts, feelings and behaviours from the domestic violence or abuse that they have experienced. My aim is to help clients to identify and recognise the cycle of abuse, create safety plans for the possibility of future domestic violence or abuse and work through and modify the view that they have about themself, which can be as a result of the domestic violence and abuse they have experienced.


You may feel that you will never recover from your loss and you may have heard other people say ‘You should be getting over it’

When we lose something or someone that we care about, it can be extremely painful. The grieving process of adapting to a loss can vary dramatically from one person to another, depending on their background, beliefs, relationship to what was lost and other factors.

Grief also refers to the loss of something ie. a job, divorce or relationship break up, a miscarriage, lifestyle, health and retirement etc. The grieving process encompasses a range of emotions and sensations ie., anger, shock, denial, emotional numbness, guilt and regret. Some people are unable to work through these distressing emotions.

I work with clients by being with them in a safe and reflective space where they can work through these difficult thoughts and emotions. Grief never goes away... life is managed around the grief.

Addictions & Substance Abuse

Addiction is a condition that results from when a person can take substances such as nicotine, cocaine or alcohol or engages in activities such as gambling, sex, shopping etc.

All can be pleasurable but the continuous use or act can be compulsive and may interfere with life responsibilities ie., working relationships, our personal relationships and our health.

I aim to create a shared and supportive space where together we will explore a client’s thoughts, feelings and behaviour in relation to their addiction. My aim is to help clients improve their motivation for change, identify and moderate their addiction related beliefs, identity their individual triggers to the addiction and manage their urges and cravings more effectively.

Most of all, I will help you to be kinder to yourself;
which can boost confidence & self-esteem.
